PRIZE FOR THE BEST DRESSED THE STORY OF LA CATRINA One of the most recognisable symbols associated with Día de los Muertos, La Catrina is the elegant female skeleton often depicted wearing an elaborate hat adorned with feathers. Her modern image emerged in the early 20th century through the work of Mexican artist and printmaker José Guadalupe Posada, whose satirical calaveras — skeleton illustrations — commented on society, class and the fashions of his time. Posada’s skeletal figures reminded people that, regardless of wealth, status or appearance, death comes to everyone. La Catrina has since evolved into a powerful and widely recognised cultural symbol — one that connects art, mortality, identity and celebration. Come alive. Dress up. Dance. Celebrate.
